The Grounds Department's main functions are the care and maintenance of campus grounds, roads, and horticulture planning, with the exception of athletic and recreational facilities.
The Grounds Department cares for trees, shrubs, grass, and flower beds on approximately 600 cultivated acres of the campus. Grass mowing, edging, and trimming and upkeep of flower beds are done on a scheduled basis during the growing season. The Grounds Department is responsible for contracting for grounds maintenance of the radio transmitter tower areas at Riverview and Ft. Myers.
The in-ground irrigation system, operated and maintained by the Grounds Department, is part of the cultivation program. Long-range plans call for this system to be totally automated in the most heavily used areas of the campus.
The Grounds Department is responsible for the general appearance of the campus. This includes determining the best locations for tables, benches, and trash containers, in addition to emptying the containers daily. The Grounds Department also has crews that regularly perform general cleanup duties. Another crew handles the campus-wide plant insect and disease control-spraying program for all outside areas. Roads, curbs and sidewalks are cleaned and repaired by the Grounds Department by contracting out the work to be accomplished.
Normal Grounds Department activities are performed routinely rather than in response to work requests. However, if an E&G Department has a planned outdoor function and would like to have lawn care immediately prior to that function, the department should call the Service Center (Extension 4-2845) with the request at least ten days in advance.
All parking lots are swept and vacuumed by the Grounds Department personnel from 11:00P.M. to 7:30 AM, Monday through Friday.
