The Vehicle Maintenance Department of the Physical Plant is responsible for the upkeep of all State-owned cars, trucks, vans, tractors, carts, boats, and turf equipment at the University of South Florida. Department activities are divided into three main functional areas: Preventive Maintenance, Emergency Service, and Paint and Body Repair.
All vehicles on campus are serviced bi-annually, with the exception of University Police vehicles which are serviced quarterly due to 24-hour operation. The purpose of our Preventive Maintenance program is to keep our vehicles in a "serviceable" condition for the expected life of the vehicle. State guidelines for car-service life is seven years or 65,000 miles, whichever occurs first.
Vehicle Repair offers emergency service for State vehicles on campus in need of towing due to a breakdown, a flat tire, a dead battery, or keys locked in a vehicle. In case of breakdown off campus call the Service Center at 974-2845 during normal work hours (Monday-Friday, 8 A.M.-5 P.M.). After normal work hours, contact the University Police at 974-2628. A subcontracted tow truck will be dispatched to bring the vehicle to our repair facility on campus.
Vehicle Repair will survey the needs of each vehicle to keep it in good repair. We will determine if we are able to perform the needed repairs on campus or sublet the work to an off-campus repair facility.
E&G departments are not charged for labor for work on vehicles and equipment performed by the Vehicle Repair Department, but they are charged for repair parts and supplies required. All departments are charged for both labor and materials on repairs to carts/people movers. Auxilliary organizations are charged for labor, repair parts and supplies required. Any work performed on vehicles or equipment that is subcontracted out is charged to E&G departments and Auxiliary organizations in its entirety (labor and parts).
Any State vehicle that is determined to be unserviceable or unsafe will be classified as a "deadlined" vehicle. This means that the vehicle must be put out of service. The accountable officer responsible for that vehicle will be notified, and requested to release the vehicle from property for disposal.
Fueling for all USF State Vehicles can be done at the fueling station located in the Physical Plant compound. The station offers unleaded, super unleaded, and diesel fuels. Departments interested in using the facilities must have University staff/student identification cards authorized and scanned at the Vehicle Maintenance shop. In addition to the fueling station access, scanned cards also allow access into the security gate which surrounds the compound. Billing for fuel service is automated and billed monthly to the individual departmental accounts. Questions concerning the fueling program should be directed to the Vehicle Maintenance Shop (Extension 4-2500).
